FAQ

What is Ultrasound?

Diagnostic ultrasound is the use of high frequency sound waves to visualize structures within the body. A small device called a transducer is used to send sound waves into the body, which are then reflected off of internal structures. The returning sound waves (echoes) are then sent back to the same transducer and the attached equipment electronically changes the echoes into a picture (image) of your internal structures. If your blood flow is what is being studied, audible sound as well as an image can be produced.

Is Ultrasound safe?

Diagnostic ultrasound has been in use for over 25 years. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine has issued the following statement in regards to the clinical safety of ultrasound: "No confirmed biological effects on patients or instrument operator caused by exposure at intensities typical of present diagnostic instruments have ever been reported. Although the possibility exists that such biological effects may be identified in the future, current data indicate that the benefits to patients of the prudent use of diagnostic ultrasound outweigh the risks, if any, that may be present."

What kind of ultrasound equipment do you use to perform the 3D 4D ultrasound?

We use the state of the art technology – the GE Voluson 730™ Expert to complete all ultrasound exams. The GE Voluson 730™ Expert has been shown in TV commercials and featured in many articles from around the world, and is the best ultrasound machine to perform 3D 4D live-motion imaging.

Why is it important that a registered sonographer perform my session?

Because the quality of your ultrasound exam is highly dependent on the sonographer's experience and training, as well as the type of equipment being used. Our state licensed diagnostic facility uses only sonographers that have undergone background testing, and are board certified registered with ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Inc.) assuring quality and experience.

What makes your services different from a “keepsake facility”?

Most other 3D facilities only offer elective limited ultrasound, and do not offer “diagnostic” ultrasound. We are a state licensed ultrasound diagnostic facility under the direct supervision of a board certified radiologist. Prior to your session we will obtain your attending OB/Gyn information so if at any time during your session our sonographer were to notice any medical concerns, we would contact your physician directly. If requested to do so, we could perform additional diagnostic ultrasounds on site as needed.

What is an Elective Limited Diagnostic Ultrasound?

This ultrasound session includes basic information about your baby including: position of the baby, heart beat, and gender determination if requested. Measurements, and estimates of weight are not performed during this type of ultrasound.

What is a Level One Diagnostic Ultrasound?

Upon ordering request of your attending OB/Gyn, NuVue Medical will perform a Level One Ultrasound, enabling a closer look at the baby and record the following: confirmation of heart-rate, position of the baby, placental location and grade, gender determination if desired, biparietal diameter and head circumference, femur length, abdominal circumference, and anatomic features. The findings of these ultrasounds are read by our Supervising Physicians, and a report is sent to your provider’s office. We are a provider for many insurance plans. Please call our office to determine if your plan is available through us.

What is the difference between 3D and 4D?

"4D" is short for four-dimensional – the fourth dimension being time. As far as ultrasound is concerned, 4D is the latest ultrasound technology. 4D takes three-dimensional ultrasound images and adds the element of time to the process. This allows you to see your unborn baby in amazing real time detail.

Does insurance cover 3D Ultrasound?

No, insurance does not currently cover 3D/4D ultrasounds, only those ordered as medically necessary by your attending OB, Gyn physician. Your elective 3D/4D session may be purchased using cash, credit card, or check.

When should I book my 3D/4D appointment?

The best time to view your baby in 3D/4D is between 27-34 weeks. You may book your appointment in advance, or call to see what is available in the near future. Our appointments tend to book up quickly – especially on Saturdays, so booking in advance in recommended. We save this appointment time especially for you to enjoy your baby with family and friends. Because of this, we ask that you kindly give us 24-hour notice of cancellation or rescheduling to avoid a cancellation/no-show fee. We want to make sure that if you are unable to attend your visit with us, that we are able to give another family a chance to take your place. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this policy.

What if my images do not turn out the way I expect?

Our sonographer will make every effort to assure we obtain the best images possible of your baby, however if the baby is persistently looking away from us, or if hands and feet are in the way it may be difficult to see the baby's face. Unfortunately we cannot make any promises that the images will always meet your expectations. Issues that can make the images less than perfect are: the amount of fluid around the area of interest, fuller-figured mothers-to-be, age of the fetus, and fetal position. Please note that the fee paid for the ultrasound appointment is non-refundable, however if the sonographer is unable to obtain images due to these circumstances, she will recommend one return visit at no additional charge.

Do I need a full bladder prior to my session?

No, you do not. It is however recommended that you drink at least 64 ounces of water  per day during your pregnancy to remain hydrated. Two days prior to your session we ask that you do this each day to obtain the best images possible.

How early can you determine gender?

As early as 17 weeks, and up to full term.

Do I need a note from my doctor?

No, we do however require that you have your initial Level One Ultrasound completed prior to your session. Upon scheduling your appointment we will ask that you provide NuVue Medical with the name and business location of your attending OB/Gyn physician, as well as images of your first sonogram. If you have not had a Level One ultrasound performed, NuVue Medical may do so if ordered by your attending OB/Gyn physician.

How many family members may attend our session?

Our studio will comfortably fit up to six guests. Our 42 inch screen provides amazing detail for the entire family to view.
